Hotel B

Barranco, Lima, Peru

Hotel B is the most characterful place to stay in Lima: a white Belle Époque mansion in the bohemian Barranco district, restored as a boutique hotel with more than 300 works of art, a library, a leafy patio and a rooftop terrace. It is Lima's only Relais & Châteaux hotel, and the ideal base for the city's celebrated food scene.

Best for: Travellers who want a stylish, intimate base in Lima with great food and art.

Where it is

Barranco is Lima's artists' quarter, a few minutes from the clifftop Malecón and the Pacific, full of galleries, cafés and some of the city's best restaurants. Miraflores is a short taxi ride away and the airport about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. It is the perfect first or last stop on our Amazon river cruise or Peru trip.

Rooms and suites

Rooms come in three styles. Alcoba rooms are compact and comfortable; Aposento junior suites add a seating area and walk-in bathrooms, some with standalone tubs; and Atelier suites, some in a newer wing that extends into the neighbouring art gallery, add terraces or foyers and dramatic open bathrooms. All mix original architecture with contemporary art.

Food, spa and the rest

The dining room focuses on Peruvian ingredients with a light, modern touch, and the famous afternoon tea, 'lonche', is included for guests. Eat in the library, the patio or on the rooftop, and finish with a pisco sour in the bar. The hotel lends bicycles, gives you a hand-painted map of Barranco and arranges cookery classes, food tours and curator-led art tours.

Why we chose it

Lima deserves more than a night on the way through, and Hotel B makes it a pleasure: intimate, beautifully designed, full of art and in the most interesting part of the city. Service is warm and personal, and the food alone justifies the stay.

When to go

Lima has a mild climate all year. December to April is summer, with sun and warmth; from May to November the sky is often grey with the garúa coastal mist, but it rarely rains. Any time works for a city stay.

The longer stay

Two or three nights lets you eat well, see the Larco Museum and the historic centre, and walk Barranco and the clifftops. Combine with Cusco and Machu Picchu or a cruise on the Amazon.
