Mashpi Lodge

Mashpi Reserve, near Quito, Ecuador

Mashpi Lodge is a striking glass-and-steel lodge set in its own private reserve of Chocó cloud forest, about three hours from Quito. Up to 400 bird species, glass frogs and waterfalls are on the doorstep, explored with resident guides and biologists, by trail, aerial gondola and sky bike. It is one of the great nature lodges of South America, and the perfect prelude to the Galápagos.

Best for: Travellers who want a luxurious, guided immersion in the cloud forest before or after the Galápagos.

Where it is

The lodge stands at 950 metres in the Metropolitan District of Quito, in the parish of Pacto, about 87km northwest of the Equator monument; the drive takes three to four hours. It sits on a plateau within the 1,300-hectare Mashpi Reserve, in one of the most biodiverse regions on earth. See our Galápagos and Ecuador trip.

Rooms and suites

Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the forest into every room. Wayra rooms suit couples and families and can connect; the three Yaku Suites add deep soaking tubs facing the canopy; and the single Wawa room suits solo travellers. Everything is calm, contemporary and designed to keep your eyes on the trees.

Food, spa and the rest

The double-height dining room serves Ecuadorian cuisine from coast and Andes, with good wines and a bar whose cocktails use forest flavours. Activities are led by naturalist guides: the Dragonfly gondola glides over the canopy, the Sky Bike pedals along a cable between the trees, the observation tower rises above the forest, and trails lead to waterfalls and the Life Centre for butterflies. There is a small spa with a hot tub overlooking the forest.

Why we chose it

Most travellers rush from Quito to the Galápagos, missing the mainland's extraordinary forests. Mashpi makes them unforgettable without compromising on comfort, and its science and conservation work give every walk real depth. It has also been recognised with MICHELIN Keys.

When to go

The cloud forest is green and humid all year, with rain likely at any time. December to May brings more rain and more frogs and flowers; June to November is a little drier. Birds are excellent year-round.

The longer stay

Two or three nights are ideal: enough for the gondola, the waterfalls, a night walk and a dawn birding session. Pair with Casa Gangotena in Quito, which is under the same ownership, before flying to the Galápagos.
