Rhodes

Rhodes has one of the finest medieval towns in Europe, a hilltop acropolis above a white village and a long, sunny season. It is easy to reach and rewards anyone who loves history with their sunshine.

Why go

The walled Old Town of Rhodes, built by the Knights of St John and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living medieval city of cobbled lanes, mosques, churches and the great Palace of the Grand Master. Add Lindos, the island's beaches and day trips to nearby islands, and you have a destination that works from spring to late autumn.

The island at a glance

Rhodes Town combines the Old Town with a modern port and seafront. The east coast has the best sandy beaches and Lindos. The west is windier and greener, with wine villages and the old capital of Kamiros. The south is wild and quiet.

Best for

Medieval history, easy access and long stays in spring and autumn.

Eat and drink

Eat in the tavernas of the Old Town's back lanes and the villages inland. Try pitaroudia, chickpea fritters, and the island's wines, including whites from the Athiri grape grown on the slopes of Mount Attavyros.

When to go

April to June and September to October. Summer is hot and busy, especially in Lindos. The season runs longer than in the Cyclades, so October is often still warm enough for swimming.

Getting there

Direct flights from many UK airports from spring to autumn, plus year-round connections via Athens. Ferries link Rhodes with the other Dodecanese islands and Piraeus.

Where to stay

A boutique hotel inside the Old Town walls for atmosphere, or a quieter hotel near Lindos or on the east coast for the beaches.

Don't miss

The Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master; the Acropolis of Lindos and its Temple of Athena, reached by a steep climb; a day trip by boat to the colourful harbour of Symi; dinner in the Old Town.
