Cruise line review

Viking

Small, calm, identical ships with Scandinavian design, an included excursion in every port and no casino or children on board: Viking has refined one idea and repeats it beautifully.

The line

Viking's ocean fleet is built around the destination rather than the ship. Itineraries lean on Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and long Grand Journeys, with plenty of overnights in port and enrichment lectures that actually prepare you for the next stop.

The ships

The ocean ships are near-identical sisters carrying about 930 guests, which means once you know one, you know them all. They are small enough to dock in central city ports that larger ships tender into or skip altogether.

Cabins and suites

Every stateroom has a veranda. Standard rooms are compact but well designed with heated bathroom floors; the Penthouse and Explorer suites add real space and are worth it on long voyages.

Food and drink

The main restaurant, the World Café, Manfredi's Italian and The Chef's Table are all included, with no surcharges. Wine and beer are poured with lunch and dinner; premium drinks outside mealtimes cost extra unless you add a package.

Onboard life

Quiet by design: guests must be 18 or over, there is no casino and the entertainment is lectures, classical music and a well-stocked library. The LivNordic Spa's thermal suite, with sauna and snow grotto, is free for everyone.

Excursions

One shore excursion is included in every port, usually a guided city or panoramic tour, with optional paid tours that go deeper or further. The included tours are solid; the paid small-group ones are often better.

What is included

A veranda stateroom, all onboard restaurants, wine and beer with meals, Wi-Fi, an excursion in every port, the thermal spa and port taxes. Premium drinks are extra, and whether gratuities are included depends on where you book.

Who will love it

Culture-led travellers who want a calm, adult atmosphere and good value without a long list of extras. If you want nightlife or big-ship variety, this is not the line.
