Cruise line review
Cunard
Seven nights across the Atlantic on Queen Mary 2, the world's only ocean liner in service, is one of travel's great set pieces: black-tie evenings, a vast library and New York rising out of the morning haze.
The line
Cunard has sailed since 1840 and today runs four Queens: Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Anne, which joined in 2024. Queen Anne moves to P&O Cruises in 2029 after her 2028 to 2029 world voyage, and Queen Mary 2 is due a major upgrade. Grand voyages and world cruises are a speciality.
The ships
Queen Mary 2 is a true liner, built with a long, deep hull for the North Atlantic, and sails regular crossings between Southampton and New York. Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth are classic, art deco-styled cruise ships; Queen Anne is the newest and carries about 3,000 guests.
Cabins and suites
Cunard is a ship of grades. Britannia staterooms dine in the main restaurant; Britannia Club adds a dedicated restaurant; Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites bring their own restaurants, lounge and terrace, plus butler and concierge service at the top.
Food and drink
Classic, formal dining in the Britannia Restaurant, with the Grills a step up in both food and calm. Afternoon tea with white-gloved service is a daily ritual. Drinks are extra unless you buy a package.
Onboard life
This is where Cunard shines: Gala evenings in black tie or cocktail dress, ballroom dancing, a planetarium on Queen Mary 2, the largest library at sea and the Insights talks programme with authors, historians and broadcasters.
Excursions
On a crossing there are none: seven days at sea are the point. On cruises, paid excursions are offered in every port.
What is included
Meals in your assigned restaurant, afternoon tea, entertainment and talks. Drinks, Wi-Fi, specialty dining and excursions are extra and gratuities are added on board; Grills suites include more.
Who will love it
Travellers who love ceremony, dressing for dinner and long days at sea with a good book. Pair an eastbound crossing with a few days in New York first.
