Topas Ecolodge, Sapa, Vietnam

Sapa, Vietnam
In the far north of Vietnam, the mountains around Sapa are carved into staircases of rice terraces, farmed by Hmong and Red Dao communities. Topas Ecolodge sits on its own hilltop above them, with bungalows facing the valleys and heated infinity pools that seem to pour straight into the view. It is one of Asia's most memorable mountain stays, at a modest price.
Best for: Active couples who want Vietnam's rice-terrace mountains in comfort, ideally in September or spring.
Where it is
The lodge is in the countryside outside Sapa, in Lào Cai province near the Chinese border, in the shadow of the Hoang Lien Son mountains, whose summit, Fansipan, tops out above 3,100 metres and now has a cable car to the top. Hanoi is about five to six hours by road, and the lodge recommends its own transfer for the winding final stretch; a sleeper train from Hanoi is the romantic alternative.
Bungalows
The bungalows are built from local materials, private and comfortable rather than lavish, each with a balcony facing the mountains and terraces. Good beds and huge views are the luxury here.
Pools, food and the rest
The heated infinity pools, looking straight over the valleys, are the lodge's signature, with complimentary sunset drinks at the pool bar. The restaurants use local ingredients, and there is a spa. The lodge employs guides and staff from nearby villages, uses renewable energy and keeps its footprint light. Guided treks through the terraces and villages, bike rides and market visits are easy to arrange.
The moment
Floating at the edge of the pool towards sunset while the rice terraces glow and mist fills the valleys, with cockerels and children's voices carrying up from a village far below.
Why we chose it
Topas combines a spectacular setting, real community connection and comfortable rooms at a fair price. The lodge is on a hillside and treks can be steep, so it suits reasonably active travellers.
Pair it with Laguna Lodge or Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge for more of the world's great views at a gentle price.
When to go
The lodge is open all year. Autumn is the favourite season: the rice ripens to gold before harvest and the air is usually clear. Spring is mild, with freshly flooded paddies reflecting the sky. The summer months are lush and rainy, and the depths of winter are chilly and frequently wrapped in fog. Vietnamese holidays, especially Tết (late January or February), are busy.
The longer stay
Spend three nights for treks, a market day at Bac Ha and the cable car up Fansipan. Combine it with Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh for a two-week northern Vietnam journey.
