Hotel Triglav Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled, with its island church and clifftop castle, is one of Europe's loveliest sights, and Hotel Triglav has one of the best seats in the house. Opened in 1906 and carefully restored, it sits on the hillside above the western shore, looking across the water, with a restaurant and wine cellar that celebrate Slovenia's excellent food and wine.

Best for: Couples who want Lake Bled's famous view, good Slovenian food and wine and a fair price, ideally in late spring or September.

Where it is

The hotel stands above the lake's western end, near Bled Jezero station and the rowing centre, a pleasant lakeside walk from the town. Ljubljana airport is about 30 minutes away and the capital about 45.

Bled sits on the edge of Triglav National Park, so Lake Bohinj, the Vintgar Gorge and the high Julian Alps are all within easy reach. The walk around Lake Bled itself takes about an hour and a half, with cafés and swimming spots along the way.

Rooms

This is a small hotel of just 21 rooms, and most look across the lake to the island and the castle, many from a balcony; ask for a lake view when you book. Interiors mix period details with contemporary comfort, including air conditioning, and the mood is calm and personal, unlike the big hotels in town.

Food, wine and the rest

The restaurant, called 1906, serves modern Slovenian cooking with local ingredients, and the cellar is a fine introduction to Slovenian wines. There is a piano bar, a fireside lounge, a small spa with an indoor pool, and culinary workshops if you fancy learning a few local dishes.

The moment

Breakfast on the terrace as the morning sun catches the island church and rowers glide across the still water below, then a pletna boat out to the island to ring the wishing bell.

Why we chose it

Hotel Triglav gives you Bled's postcard view, real character and good food at a gentle price. It is a perfect first stop in Slovenia, one of Europe's most underrated small countries.

Pair it with Heritage Hotel Hallstatt for a lakes journey through the Alps, or with Hôtel Le Faucigny in Chamonix.

When to go

The hotel is open all year. July and August are busy with summer holidaymakers. May, June and September bring warm days, swimmable water by early summer and far fewer people. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with snow on the Julian Alps and the castle lit up at night.

The longer stay

Three nights lets you see Bled, Lake Bohinj and the Vintgar Gorge. For a week, add Ljubljana's riverside cafés, the Soča valley's emerald river and the Vršič Pass over the Julian Alps.
