Airport review
SampleDoha Hamad
The airport that turned a four-hour layover into a reason to plan a layover: an indoor garden, a chapel that is genuinely quiet and a train into the city that takes 25 minutes.
9/10the layover airport that makes a long connection feel like a rest.
Getting there
The metro runs from the terminal to the city in 25 minutes and costs almost nothing. Taxis are metered and cheap. If you are in transit, the airport hotel and the sleep pods are inside the secure area, so no visa is needed.
Terminals
One long concourse with the satellite building attached by an automated train. Connections are signed clearly and the walking distances are longer than they look on the board, so allow 20 minutes between gates at opposite ends.
Security and fast track
Security is efficient at most hours and the transit lane is separate from arrivals. There is no paid fast track, and on our visit none was needed: twelve minutes at midday.
Lounges
The airline lounge is large, good and busy; the pay-in lounge is quieter and cheaper than most. Both have showers. The free quiet rooms off the main concourse are the best-kept secret in the building.
Food and shops
The orchid garden at the centre of the concourse is free and worth 20 minutes. Eating options run from a decent food hall to two sit-down restaurants, and the coffee bars stay open through the night.
Tips
A layover of five hours or more is long enough to leave the airport and see the museum. If you stay airside, find the quiet room before the seats near the gates fill up after nine at night.
Questions
Can I leave the airport on a layover?
Yes for most nationalities, and the metro makes it easy. Check the visa rules for your passport before you plan it, and allow four hours minimum for a round trip into the city.
Is there a hotel inside the secure area?
Yes, with rooms charged by the hour, plus sleep pods. You do not need to clear immigration to use either.
How long is a comfortable connection?
Ninety minutes is enough on a single ticket. Five hours or more is long enough to leave the airport and see something.
