Cruise line review

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Velvet, chandeliers and art on every wall: Uniworld's ships are designed like boutique hotels, and the fare covers almost everything, so the only decision of the day is which glass to order.

The line

Uniworld celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2026 and is the most richly styled of the big river lines. It sails Europe's main rivers and the Douro, plus the Nile, the Mekong, the Ganges and the Amazon in Peru. The line is moving to an all Super Ship fleet by 2027, with three new ships planned for that year.

The ships

Each ship has its own theme and interior, from French chateau to Venetian palazzo, rather than the identical layouts of most fleets. The newest, the S.S. Emilie, joined in March 2026 with interiors inspired by Gustav Klimt and his muse Emilie Flöge, sailing the Danube, Rhine and Main.

Cabins and suites

Hotel-style beds, marble bathrooms and fabrics chosen to match each ship's theme. Many staterooms have French balconies; the suites add butler service and more space, which matters on the longer itineraries.

Food and drink

Farm-to-table menus built around the region you are sailing through, with wine, beer, spirits and speciality coffees included throughout the day rather than only at meals.

Onboard life

Quiet, polished and social in the bar before dinner. Expect a pianist, a talk on the next port and an attentive crew; the staff-to-guest ratio is among the highest on the rivers.

Excursions

Included tours in every port, with choices that range from classic city walks to gentler outings and more active options. The specialist themed sailings, such as wine and Christmas markets, add depth for repeat river travellers.

What is included

All meals, drinks throughout the day, excursions, gratuities, Wi-Fi and airport transfers on the main embarkation and disembarkation days. Flights are usually extra.

Who will love it

Travellers who want river cruising to feel like a grand hotel and would rather not sign a bar bill all week. If you prefer pared-back Scandinavian calm, look at Viking or AmaWaterways.
