Sundance, Utah, USA

Robert Redford founded Sundance in 1969, in a steep canyon beneath Mount Timpanogos, and it still feels like his: small, arty, wooded and wonderfully uncrowded next to Utah's big ski resorts. In January 2026 it opened its first proper hotel, the ski-in, ski-out Inn, giving discerning travellers a polished base for a week of quiet slopes, studio classes and long mountain walks.

Best for: Couples who want quiet slopes, creativity and mountain walks rather than a big-resort scene, ideally midweek outside the American school holidays.

Where it is

The resort lies on the Alpine Loop, a winding scenic road through aspen and pine at the foot of Mount Timpanogos, whose 3,582-metre summit is among the loftiest in the Wasatch. Provo is about 25 minutes away and Salt Lake City airport roughly an hour, so it is easy to reach yet feels far from the busy resorts across the range.

Close by, rangers lead visitors into limestone caves high on the mountainside at Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and the Alpine Loop itself is one of the loveliest drives in the state in autumn.

Rooms and cottages

The Inn has 63 rooms and suites, ski-in, ski-out, built with reclaimed timber and hung with Native American art, with a lounge bridging the North Fork of the Provo River. Overnight guests get a ski valet and boot room.

If you prefer the old Sundance, book one of the cottages tucked into the woods along the creek, with stone fireplaces, porches and handmade furniture, or a private mountain home for a longer stay.

Food, studios and the rest

Dinner means the Tree Room, wrapped since 1970 around a tree that still grows through it, and now recognised with a MICHELIN Key. The Foundry Grill is more relaxed, and the little Owl Bar, with live music, is where everyone ends up. Tired legs go to the spa or to The Springs, outdoor pools paired with a sauna and a cold plunge.

What makes Sundance different is the art: drop into the studios for pottery, jewellery or photography classes. The ski area is small and quiet, with a new high-speed quad opening more terrain for the 2026–27 season. In summer there is hiking, biking and fly-fishing.

The moment

The trail to Stewart Falls, which drops in two great steps from the side of Timpanogos, through aspen groves that turn bright gold in autumn. In winter, the moment is a last run with the valley below, then a fireside drink in the Owl Bar.

Why we chose it

Sundance is the antidote to Utah's mega-resorts: small, soulful and rooted in art and nature. Serious skiers may want bigger mountains, but for travellers who want gentle slopes, good food, creativity and peace, it is a gem, and the new Inn adds real comfort.

Combine it with the hot springs of Dunton in Colorado, or the Victorian buzz of Hotel Jerome in Aspen.

When to go

The ski season usually runs from early December to late March or early April. American school holidays fill the slopes at Christmas, in Presidents' Day week in mid-February and over spring break in March; outside those, especially midweek in January and early February, the mountain is blissfully quiet.

Summer is for walking and outdoor concerts, and late September to early October is the golden time, when the aspens on the Alpine Loop blaze and the summer crowds have gone.

The longer stay

Four or five nights lets you mix ski days with a studio class and a spa afternoon. Better still, use Sundance as the start of a grand Utah road trip: south to the red-rock national parks of Zion, Bryce Canyon and Arches, which are at their most comfortable in spring and autumn.
