Post Ranch Inn

By the Destination Traveller editors · 30 October 2026

Big Sur, California, USA

Post Ranch Inn is one of the most spectacular hotels in America: wood-and-glass houses on a ridge 1,200 feet above the Pacific, among redwoods and wildflowers on the Big Sur coast. Designed for adults to slow down, it has cliff-edge infinity pools, a superb restaurant and rooms where the ocean fills every window.

Best for: Couples who want the most dramatic setting on the California coast and complete peace.

Where it is

The inn sits on Highway 1 in Big Sur, about 30 miles south of Carmel and close to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and McWay Falls. Highway 1 is open from both north and south. San Francisco is about three hours by car, and the drive is part of the pleasure. See our California road trip.

Rooms and suites

Every room has a king bed, a wood-burning fireplace and a view; many have private hot tubs and balconies. Choose an Ocean or Cliff House for the Pacific views, a Coast House for both ocean and mountain, a Tree House raised on stilts in the redwoods, or a Peak House above it all. Rooms are limited to two people, and the inn is for adults only.

Food, spa and the rest

Breakfast is included and served at Sierra Mar, the cliff-top restaurant that holds a MICHELIN Green Star for its farm-driven cooking and has a remarkable wine list. Two infinity spa pools, heated year-round, hang over the ocean, and there is a lap pool. The redesigned spa sits in the redwoods, and there are complimentary yoga sessions, guided walks and stargazing.

The moment

Soaking in the infinity pool at sunset as the fog rolls in far below and the Pacific turns gold.

Why we chose it

Big Sur is the highlight of any California road trip, and Post Ranch is the place to stay: spectacular, peaceful and genuinely sustainable in its design. It holds MICHELIN Three Keys, one of very few hotels in the United States to do so, and it lives up to it.

When to go

Spring brings wildflowers and green hills; September and October are often the clearest and warmest months on the coast. Summer can bring fog in the mornings. Winter is quiet and dramatic, with occasional storms.

The longer stay

Two or three nights lets you hike in Pfeiffer Big Sur and Julia Pfeiffer Burns state parks, see McWay Falls, drive to the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, and spend a whole day doing nothing but looking at the sea.
