Southern Cross Air

The carrier that treats the Pacific as its own backyard: very long sectors flown comfortably, a premium economy that is genuinely good and lounges designed for a six-hour layover.

9/10the long-haul cabin that makes the far side of the world feel close.

The cabins

Business is a full-flat suite with doors on the new aircraft and a staggered shell on the older ones, which is why you should check the tail number before booking. Premium economy is the seat to have if you are not paying for business: a real footrest, a wide shell and a proper meal.

Seats

Economy pitch is average, but the seat back reclines further than most and the lumbar support inflates. On a fourteen-hour sector that matters more than the screen size.

Food and drink

The galley takes its produce seriously, including on the long Pacific sectors where most airlines give up. Order the pre-departure meal at least 24 hours ahead and eat it first; it is better than the main service.

Service

Warm, unhurried and clearly experienced on long sectors. The crew hand out water before the seatbelt sign comes off, and the overnight service is timed to the destination rather than the departure clock.

Network highlights

London to Auckland via Los Angeles, and a non-stop Chile to Tahiti flight that exists nowhere else. The two-hour Sydney layover is the cheapest way to add a night in the city.

Loyalty

Status is easy to reach and the lounges are the reward worth chasing. Award space on the Pacific routes opens at 30 days and goes fast.

Who it suits

Travellers heading to New Zealand, Australia or the Pacific islands who would rather pay for a good premium economy than a mediocre business.

Questions

Is premium economy worth it on Southern Cross Air?

More than most. The shell is wide, the footrest is real and the meal is the business-class one, which makes it the best value seat on the Pacific routes.

Which aircraft has the suites with doors?

The newest 787s and the A350s. Older 777s have the staggered shell, which is still good but less private, so check the tail number when you book.

Can I use the lounge without status?

Yes, for a day fee that includes a shower and a hot meal. On a six-hour layover it is the best money on the ticket.
