Cruise line review

Variety Cruises

A Greek family company with roots in the 1940s, a handful of small ships for 34 to 72 guests and swim stops in coves you would never find alone: Variety is the island hop done properly.

The line

Variety Cruises has been owned and run by the Venetopoulos family for three generations, and its home is the Greek islands. It also sails Italy and Malta, the Adriatic, Cape Verde and West Africa, the Seychelles and French Polynesia, mostly on seven-night voyages.

The ships

A fleet of around eight small motor yachts and motor-sailers, none carrying more than 72 guests. Variety Voyager, with its three masts and wooden decks, is the flagship, and Callisto, carrying 34, is the most intimate.

Cabins and suites

Simple, comfortable and compact, with outside views in most cabins. Think boutique yacht rather than luxury ship: you come for the islands, not the stateroom.

Food and drink

Fresh Greek and Mediterranean cooking, often bought in the ports the ship visits. Fares include full or half board depending on the itinerary; drinks are extra.

Onboard life

Social and informal. With so few guests, you quickly know everyone, and the crew time the days around swims, small harbours and long lunches.

Excursions

Some guided visits are included, with others available locally. The best moments are the spontaneous swim stops off the ship in quiet coves.

What is included

Your cabin and meals, full or half board depending on the itinerary. Drinks, tips, most tours and Wi-Fi are extra.

Who will love it

Independent-minded couples and friends who want the Greek islands at a gentle pace and are happy with simple comfort. Book May, June or September to avoid the August crowds.
